Architecture must be interpreted, not just photographed
The right photography lets your work speak for itself. To jurors, to peers, and to every future client who encounters your portfolio.
What happens when architecture is photographed without understanding
Most photographers document spaces. They capture what's there. But architecture isn't about what's there. It's about why it's there. The relationship between structure and site, the way light was designed to move through a room, the logic behind a material transition.
Photography that misses intent doesn't just underperform. It actively misrepresents the work. And misrepresentation compounds across every platform it touches.
Design Intent Gets Flattened
Spatial logic, material sequences, and compositional decisions become invisible. The project reads as style rather than thinking. Peers can't see what made it worth building.
Award Submissions Underperform
Georgie, CHBA, and AIBC jurors evaluate hundreds of entries. When the photography doesn't communicate the design decision clearly, the project gets overlooked before anyone reads the narrative.
You Have to Explain the Work
If you find yourself narrating what the photography should have communicated, the photography failed. Strong imagery makes the explanation unnecessary.
Portfolio Becomes Inconsistent
Different photographers with different eyes create a body of work that feels fragmented. No visual thread. No recognizable standard. The portfolio fills space instead of building authority.
Interpretation Over Documentation
Every shoot begins with understanding design intent. Compositions are shaped by the logic behind the architecture, not by trying to capture everything in the space.
Restraint Over Spectacle
No over-lighting, no dramatic manipulation, no renders or composites. Architecture is shown as it was designed to be experienced. Honest, clear, and precise.
Fewer, Stronger Images
We prioritize the frames that communicate design decisions over comprehensive coverage. A curated set of 25 images that read correctly is worth more than 60 that don't.

Available Add-Ons
Supplemental services that can be added to any engagement.
A calm, structured process
No surprises. No re-scoping. Every step is designed to honour your design intent and make the experience effortless.
Discovery
We talk about the project, the design thinking behind it, and how the images will be used. We also plan around natural light, weather, and seasonal conditions to ensure the best possible result. No pricing at this stage. Just understanding fit.
Planning
I review plans, study the orientation and site context, and build a shot strategy around your specific design decisions. Light timing, access, and compositions are all aligned before I arrive.
Photography
On-site, I work quietly and independently. Every composition prioritizes spatial logic, material honesty, and the relationship between structure and site.
Delivery
Edited images delivered within 5 to 10 business days through a curated online gallery. High-res, web-optimized, and ready for any use.
"What first drew us to Matt's work was his use of natural light. He captures spaces in a way that feels authentic and honest, allowing the materials to shine. Matt truly understands what it takes to showcase a project."Jordan Maddox, Sitelines Architecture
Before you reach out
When should the conversation start?
Ideally before the project is complete. The best results come from planning the shoot around light, staging, and site conditions while you still have control over them. For award submissions, the earlier the better.
Do you study the plans beforehand?
Yes. I review drawings, renderings, or any reference material you can share. Understanding orientation, circulation, and material intent before arriving on-site means every composition is intentional, not reactive.
How does cost-sharing work?
I coordinate everything. Just let me know which builder or designer was involved. Each party gets their own curated set composed around their specific work. The total is split evenly, and everyone gets full unlimited usage.
Do you offer video as well?
Yes. All three project tiers include a social media reel. The Architectural Project includes a 60 second project video. The Award-Ready tier includes a longer documentary-style film. Everything is captured during the same shoot day. For the Project Session tier, video can be added on separately.
Can I use the images for everything?
Yes. Every engagement includes a full unlimited use license. Website, publications, awards, proposals, exhibitions, print, advertising. No restrictions. They're your images.
What if I want changes after delivery?
The curated gallery is a finished deliverable. If specific adjustments are needed, like colour correction, crop modifications, or additional formats, those are accommodated. Reshoots or significant scope changes are quoted as a separate session.
What about multi-phase documentation?
For projects where you want to capture the build process alongside completion, multi-phase documentation is available as a custom scope. We plan the visits together around key milestones.
What's the first step?
Book a discovery call. We'll talk about the project, the design intent, and what you need the images to do. No pricing at that stage. Just a conversation about fit. If we're aligned, I'll follow up with a proposal.
Your design tells the story.
Let the imagery communicate it.
Every engagement begins with a conversation about the project and what success looks like. No pressure, no pitch. Just understanding fit.
